Waterfall enrichment

Asking several data providers in a fixed order for the same field, and stopping at the first one that returns a usable answer.

No single data provider covers every company and every person well. Coverage varies by country, industry and company size, and a provider that is strong on US software firms may know little about German manufacturers. Waterfall enrichment works around this by querying providers one after another: if the first has no verified email for a contact, the second is asked, then the third, until one returns an answer that passes your checks.

The order usually puts the cheapest or most accurate provider first, and each step costs money only when the earlier ones failed. Two things make a waterfall trustworthy. Every answer should be checked the same way, whichever provider gave it; an email address found by the third provider still needs verification. And the record should keep which provider supplied each field and when, so a bad source can be found and removed later.
